 | Born | 11/03/48 Durban South Africa |
Born in Durban South Africa in 1948. Arderne spent much of his life in various parts of Africa, where his father worked for World Health Organization. His family's regular moves meant he studied in various schools in South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Swaziland, eventually completing his o-levels by correspondence in Uganda.
His affinity with boats and water was established when his father moved to Mauritius and bought him a small sailing boat. His enjoyment of the outdoors led him to work on a farm in Kenya. This was followed with work on a yacht leaving from Mombassa.
In 1969 settled in South Africa. Here he did a variety of work on fishing boats, taxi driving, fork-lift driving, then in restaurants as cook and then manager.
In 1973 began his career in art as layout artist for various magazines such as Skin Diver and The South African Nature Conservation Magazine.
In 1975 he studied art for a year at the Technical College in Durban. Here he met his wife, married after completing college and started his own business in art related fields doing murals, crafts, painting and sculpture as well as sign writing.
Having divorced in 1980, he did a 2 year contract in Botswana as draughts and camp manager for French prospecting company. He then moved to Cape Town, opened a small art school and continued painting and sculpture.
In 1998 relocated to London (where his father was born), doing various work before setting up studio and starting full time artwork again in 2001. He has just acquired a studio in Lowestoft, on the south coast, from which he will be working when not at his address in Enfield North London. |
