Artist's Biography

I have worked with art since I was three years old. All through grade school and into college, I developed skills with drawing, painting, pastels and watercolor, and to some degree sculpture.

Early on I was enamored of Flemish art. Flemish artists' skills with and use of light and dark impress me to this day. French Impressionism was my next great love. Once I reached college and to this day it is Abstract art that inspires me. Miro, Picasso, Klee, and Matisse are my muses. Frida Kahlo' art and life fascinate me to no end.

My favorite mediums are acrylic paint on canvas (because I and my painting technique are too impatient for oil), and metal on canvas. I learned Arc welding a few years back, but due to a lack of access to welding equipment I developed the technique of wrapping sheet metal onto canvas as an alternative method. I could spend a great deal of my time experimenting with variations of metal on canvas.

I love working to bend thin sheets of metal onto canvas and building up from that base to create 3D wall pieces. I've yet to figure out why I'm so enraptured with this medium, so perhaps you can venture a theory for me.

These days I experiment with what I call quasi-collages, and have discovered that gel ink pens add a very interesting quality to the written word for these pieces.

Now and then I create more realistic paintings, more because they help hone my artistic skills than because of inspiration. It is the freedom of more abstract interpretation that feeds my creative drive. I also like to see how much expression I can express with the most minimal of lines.

With me it is truly the case that I create art because it is what makes me tick. It sometimes is the very reason that I breathe. I am utterly fascinated with the process. Sometimes I can just sit and stare at a brush stroke because of how it emerged versus what I had envisioned.

When I can look back over past work and love what I see, I feel blessed. And when other people such as you happen to like, even love it as well, there are no words for my joy.
