This self taught artist was born in Los Angeles, California. Bret Philpot studied drafting and architecture at the Phoenix Institute of Technology, leading to a career in drafting and construction. He subsequently taught civil engineering drafting at Riverside Community College in Southern California. Eventually, Bret decided he was no longer satisfied with the limitations of drafting. Bret, much like his art, is not reserved or restricted, he goes exploring. That he pulls from both negative and positive experiences when creating art is clearly evident in his work. Each painting has a powerful life force, at times appearing calm and soothing, yet at other times hostile and jarring in it's expression. Bret's work is free from debates about the relative merits of abstraction and figureation, believing instinct over reason. Rather than produce the world around him, he aims to exploit the free expression of his consciousness. He paints images that are both abstract and figurative, demonstrating that energy and spontaneity are more important than rationality. |
