 | Artist Statement Steve Brumbaugh
Northern Minnesota has played a huge role in the development of my passion and interest in landscapes. I spent many years exploring the north shore of Lake Superior. I find the rock formations along the water and the rivers that feed the Lake are a continued source of inspiration.
When searching for subject matter to paint, I look for unique shapes and textures within nature. There is an intrinsic flow within nature the way the wind can bend the grass, the twists and turns in a tree trunk and eroded effects of water on a landscape. It is this natural flow that I try to capture in my paintings by exaggerating shape and color to create motion throughout the work. The size of the pieces I create requires greater physicality in the application techniques allowing me to capture the feeling of movement in the end.
The most frequent comment about my work relates to its size, because traditionally watercolors tend to be smaller. During college, I had the privilege of studying under Rob Erdle, whose bold style and large scale changed the way I viewed working with watercolor. Working big allows me to create a portal into the landscape for the viewer. I like to create the feeling that you can walk right into the scene as part of the overall experience.
My style is representational yet it holds an element of abstraction. I like the fact that the nature of watercolor has a life of its own, and this is one of the many reasons why this media continues to excite me. As with all things, my work will continue to change as I evolve and learn through my journeys in life.
