| My painting has been called whimsical for its air of lightness. A sense of humor natually translates from my world view to my brushtips. Color is my toy. I play with it joyfully. I once told a reporter that I loved color, which is why I put them all in my paintings. My palette is a riot of tones and tints. Any given canvas will hold a multitude of techniques: washes, impastos, underpainting, use of complimentary color over or next to another. The result is a visual feast of vibration and movement as the eye is unable to remain fixed on one spot on the canvas. Nothing is static. Even buildings breath with the movement of light and shadow rendered in color.
After studying art throughout my youth, I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Northwestern State University of Louisiana in 1974. I have been a resident of San Francisco since 1976, supporting myself and my family primarily as a graphic artist, screenprinter and illustrator. Choosing to study printmaking through hands on experience, I worked for several screenprinting and display firms, earning journeyman status within three years. I established my own graphic arts business, Loft-Art Graphic Services, in 1981.
My style emphasizes the interplay of color and light. my subject matter ranges from the Impressionistic grandeur of the urban and rural landscapes of Northern California to the intricate realism of my cluttered basement shelves. A number of suites have resulted: San Francisco landmarks and Victorians, Sierra landscapes, Northern California coastal scenes and vineyard studies, and still life studies of tools. Many of my portraits are of family members.
The influence of the French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, especially Van Gogh and Gauguin, can be seen in my work. I also look to Bay Area figurative artists David Park and Richard Diebenkorn for inspiration. More personally, my in-laws, Merv and Dorothy Schwartz, and my good friend Weston Rose were active Bay Area artists who provided valuable insight and encouragement. I studied watercolor and advertising design with Cesar Hernandez, and 2D and 3D design, painting and filmmaking with Jack McClain while living in Redondo Beach, California. In Louisiana, I was taught pastels by Birdie Landry, watercolor by Orville Hanchey, oils and acrylics by Cliff Thorn, and sculpture and printmaking by Rivers Murphy. As the only undergraduate fine art major in what was essentially a teachers' college, I was included in many of the graduate level courses and workshops.
My work is owned and collected by individuals across the United States, and as far away as Chile, Denmark and Italy. |
