Basically self-taught, Doni captures the nobility and spirit of her living subjects in their natural environment. Whether it be the delicate curve of a feather, the suggested weight of a rock, or the graceful poise of a leopard, each is infused with perfect reality. Her paintings resonate with depth, a highly persuasive feeling for texture, and solidity of mass.
As a child, she experienced Nebraska's seasonal changes and the beauty of its harsh winters. A move to Arizona started an ongoing love affair with the desert. The enduring mystique of its isolation and dramatic sunsets were painted with spellbinding verity to place and time. A final move to California brought about not only a recognition of the ocean's power and dynamics, but also its ephemeral quality of dancing light on water's surface.
A world traveler, Doni avidly records natural phenomena with a camera. Studies of layered clouds over New Zealand, wave patterns mid-ocean, the wildlife on the vast plains of Africa and field impressions of birds are documented by her discerning eye. The photographic studies build a collective lexicon ready for consideration in future work. She has a deeply felt admiration for nature and is devoted to communicating its multitude of ever changing atmospheric conditions and attitudes.
After experimenting with various techniques, mediums and materials, adopting, adapting and discarding, Doni found oils to be her favorites. Beginning with a specially prepared canvas, creating a super smooth surface, Doni has developed a unique painting technique which enables her to include the finest details in her work. Multiple glazes enhance the rich colors achieved with the oils. Each step measurably adds to the incredible sensation of depth.
Doni's paintings have won awards in national juried shows and can be found in private collections in the United States, Great Britain, Germany; Japan and Hungary.
Since the program's inception, Doni has been an Artist in Residence at the Living Desert in Palm Desert, California. In 2000, she participated in the Pacific Rim Art Exposition in Seattle, Washington. Other favorite shows have been the Classic-American Western Art Show at the Autry Western Heritage Museum in Los Angeles, California and the La Jolla Festival of Arts in La Jolla, California.
Doni's many commissioned works range from lions and leopards in Kruger National Park in South Africa to location-specific landscapes to pet portraits. She has a special gift for bringing to life on canvas the images and ideas, dreams and visions of others. She captures the individual personality of each animal.
As a concerned conservationist, Doni is a member of the National Audubon Society, the Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, National Parks, Living Planet Society, Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund, Natural Resources Defense Council, and other organizations by contributions and donations of artworks.
Richard Danskin Gallery on El Paseo in Palm Desert, California has represented Doni for the past 6 years. |
