Artist's Biography

At an early age I was influenced by the paintings of American artist Stuart Davis of New York and my father's work. My father was a commercial artist in Philadelphia and he liked the use of bright colors and graphics by Davis. My father's work reflected this. Our family regularly visited museums and galleries in NYC and Philadelphia during the 40's and 50's to see works of Davis, Picasso, Pollock and Dali.

My father taught me to use a brush before a pencil. He trained me by having me help him paint large signs and by cutting out designs and letters for silk screen artwork.

I attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. One of my teachers there was Robert Venturi, the Architect of the Seattle Art Museum and known for his book "Complexityand Contradiction in Architecture". I also saw and talked with well-known Architects Paul Rudolph, George Qualles and Robert Geddes regularly.

I received a Bachelor of Architecture at Penn and afterwards lived in Europe for a year. While in Italy and France I concentrated on landscape painting. I returned to America and continued landscape work until I saw some paintings by Riley and Vasarely. I then started painting in a different vain, when "Op Art" (optical) was popular during the 70's.

I now paint bold color planes and forms in simple-complex abstract compositions. My paintings
incorporate bright colors, graphics, shadows, spherical and chromatic aberration, multiple views of objects, interpenetrating forms, grids and patterns to obtain spatial effects and movement.

Most of the time I use a mahlstick while painting. I do not tape edges. The paintings are on canvas or hardboard and are done with water base acrylic and latex paint. My paintings are meant to be tantalizing to the eye and I hope that they might be visually exciting.

I have continued to paint and draw while pursuing a career as a licensed Architect. My specialties are managing the design and construction of office buildings, parking facilities, and site planning. I live in north Seattle near Green Lake.
