About the Artist: Joan Bellin's education in art has ranged from informal lessons in perspective taught by her father, to completing a formal education in art and design at the University of Minnesota.
As a color specialist and textile artist, she designed and printed fabrics by the yard for interior application. After seven years as a partner in her own business, Close At Hand, the compulsion to create art for art's sake succeeded in dominating her work.
During a five year period in art sales and picture framing, she completed the transition from textile arts to fine arts. Joan and her husband Rick O'Connor also moved from the inner city to seven acres of woods and pond, adding two amazing creations: Hallie and Will. For 11 years, Joan's studio had been in the house they built and continue to reinvent near Excelsior. Present studio is in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.
The Artist's Work: Joan's artistic process is the result of extending traditional printing methods outside of their usual boundaries. Her printing techniques range from using partial images from silk screens, to open screens without images, to printing with blocks or found objects or brayers. ` Her methods also include transferring painted imagery from Plexiglas to paper (monotype), and drawing directly on top of prints with oil pastels or ink. Collage is another vehicle Joan maneuvers in her mixture of mediums that include pieces of wood, metals, natural fibers, and plastics.
The artist's inspirations come ultimately through dreams or reflections based on events, from plant and land formations, and from architectural components. Her pieces are abstract and expressionistic. Her creations are one of a kind.
