Roger Hanson was born and raised in Hector, Minnesota, graduating from Gustavus Adolphus College with a liberal arts degree. He has had careers in sales, sales management and teaching. He has an M.A. from the University of Colorado.
Self-trained, Hanson's first paintings were impressionism landscapes. His first commercial success as an artist occurred when he received a best of show award in the early eighties at a gallery in Golden, Colorado.
After winning this award, Hanson was invited regularly to exhibitions around Colorado. He showed in Vail, Steamboat Springs, Glenwood Springs, and in three galleries in metropolitan Denver.
After his retirement and a move to Minnesota, Roger Hanson decided to try his hand at abstract expressionism, and then his own creation, Color Expressionism. He sells at several galleries in the U.S. and the U.K. and through www.artcrawl.com, www.doubletakeart.com, and www.mnartists.org. He is also online with the Saatchi Gallery in London. Go to saatchigallery.com, click on the pink and black box to the right - entitled Saleroom Online, and enter his name.
Hanson's first appearance at a New York gallery was at a showing at the Montserrat Gallery in the SoHo district in October and November 2001.
In the June/July/August 2002 issue of GALLERY&STUDIO, published in New York, Dorothy K. Riordan writes, "Roger Hanson is a consummate colorist, setting strokes of intense fluorescent hues afloat on black fields to create thickly impastoed compositions that suggest falling leaves in a fanciful chromatic realm where autumn trees shed pastel confetti. Combining the textural intensity of Milton Resnick with the color field pyrotechnics more akin to Jules Olitski, Hanson's paintings are at once tough and lyrical in the very best sense of both terms. It is their combination of chromatic dynamism and juicy tactility that makes his paintings succeed so admirably, his trust in the untrammeled painterly gesture, as well as his belief in the physical properties of paint as a conduit for feeling. Like most of the best abstract painters today, Hanson aims not to revive the heroic aspects of modernism but to probe those essences which transcend appearances and embody them in the material substance of pigment." From August until December, 2003, Mr.Hanson showed his paintings at the Art Domain Gallery, Port d'Andratx, Majorca. In September, 2003, he was in a group showing at Rettendon Common in suburban London. He showed at the Sheridan-Russell Gallery in central London in November, 2003, and at the Biennale Internazionale Dell'Arte Contemporanea at the Fortezza da Basso, Florence, Italy, from December 6 - 14, 2003.
From February 26 - March 2, he showed at the Art Expo New York, 2004. From October 21 - 24, 2004, the artist showed at the AAF London in the Battersea Park Exhibition Hall.
Mr.Hanson is also an author. His "Unleaded" is being released by PublishAmerica in the summer of 2008. |
